In fallout 3 in the main quest it had you turning on giant water purifier to clean the radiation from the water. How could you do this an is it possible to do this in real life?

Trying to filter the water could work... Best option by my knowledge would be distillation but that would be rather impossible to do with such quantity.
Or you could just wait 2000 years and wait for radioactive decay to do its job.
